Poquoson homeowners upset about drainage ditch backup

Sarah Hamrick said when it rains, especially when it rains hard, the ditches behind their homes flood because of debris buildup, and she said it’s getting worse.

POQUOSON, Va. — It's a growing concern for people living in the townhouses at Poquoson Place.

Sarah Hamrick said when it rains, especially when it rains hard, the ditches behind their homes flood because of debris buildup, and she said it’s getting worse.

“In the past year it's been three or four times,” Hamrick said. “I want a way that they keep it cleared and the culvert is cleaned so the water can drain, and it doesn't come in the yards.”

Hamrick's biggest concern is water coming into her yard, or further!

"I would say if the water starts running under the houses it can be a lawsuit for not maintaining the grounds,” Hamrick said.

A Homeowner’s Association representative told 13News Now the ditches are routinely maintained.

She said they clean out the ditches twice a year, and a landscaper comes out once a week to remove twigs and branches from the drainage ditch.

The HOA representative also said the person who owns the house right next to the property doesn't maintain the land, and because there's a downward slope, every time it rains debris rushes to the ditches.

She said they will look and determine if they can do anything differently.
