HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) — Virginia State Police is investigating a number of accidents due to icy conditions in Hampton on Thursday.

One accident resulted in a fatality on I-64 at Settlers Landing Road around 4 a.m.

The driver of a 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, 62-year-old Reginald K. Mayfield, was traveling eastbound in I-64 and lost control of his vehicle. He ran off the road and hit a guardrail.

His truck then swerved back into traffic and was hit by a 2008 Ford F-250, driven by Rashad Sawyer. After impact, the Nissan stopped in the middle of I-64.

Sawyer, whose F-250 stopped partially on the shoulder lane, got out of his vehicle to check on Mayfield when a 2014 Ford Fusion, traveling eastbound, struck Sawyer and his truck. Sawyer was outside of his vehicle at the time of the second crash.

Mayfield and Sawyer were transported to Riverside Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford Fusion, Ona Corprew, was not injured in the crash.

Reginald K. Mayfield of Virginia Beach succumbed to his injuries sustained in the accident, and police learned he was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

Rashad Sawyer, of North Carolina, suffered major injuries.

On Thursday in total, there were five accidents beginning around 3:54 a.m., PIO Sgt. Michelle Anaya said. The other accident happened around the same time as the I-64 crash and involved vehicle property damage only accident, and two single vehicle property damage only accidents.
