PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Police said a man died in a shooting that took place early Sunday morning.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about the shooting in the 2700 block of Barclay Ave. at 7:41 a.m.
Officers found 46-year-old James Street shot in the upper part of his body. He died there.
Street's mother, Bertha Harrington, fought through tears as she spoke with 13News Now's Steven Graves.
“I don’t understand who would have a grudge against him that badly that they’d want to hurt him like that," Harrington said. “He wasn’t one to sit out and fight. He didn’t get into fights. He wasn’t one to hurt people..that wasn’t in him. That’s why I say I don’t understand.”
Street leaves behind two children and a newborn grandson.
“He was just born in May, so he got time to see him and spend some time with him," his mom said.
Monday, detectives walked through the neighborhood speaking with residents about the shooting.
They say they believe this is an isolated incident, but do not know the reason behind the shooting or who is responsible for it.
