"Elf" (2003), "Scrooged" (1988) and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) made the top three on the list nationwide, HowtoWatch.com said in a news release.

The research group took Thrillist's list of "50 Best Christmas Movies of All Time" and analyzed those titles with Google Trends to find the most searched film by state.

"It's science as solid as NORAD's Santa sleigh tracker," the researchers said.

90s movies maintained popularity according to the Google Trend analysis.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) was the most popular in California, Nevada, and Utah, along with "The Muppet Christmas Carol" (1992) trending in Maine.

Others that fall into the oldies but goodies category made the list, too.
