Someone impersonated a police officer in Williamsburg, tried pulling over driver

Police said there's at least one report of someone activating blue and red emergency lights and trying to pull people over.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WVEC) -- — Williamsburg police said someone is driving around pretending to be them.

Officials said the impersonator even flashed blue and red lights trying to pull people over. There's at least one report of it happening Friday night on Richmond Road.

Ryan Zrakovi said it happened to him. He thought he was on the wrong side of the law for a few moments.

“I looked up and saw the lights,” Zrakovi said.

However, it wasn't Zrakovi who was in trouble with the law. He quickly realized someone was impersonating a police officer.

“Who knows what could have happened if they stopped me,” Zrakovi said.

Zrakovi said the car pulled behind him and flashed those lights, but then the lights went off.

“I thought it was a cop giving me a warning,” Zrakovi said.

Zrakovi said the story doesn’t end there. He said the blue and red lights came on a second time.

“I thought it didn’t seem right because the car didn't match an unmarked cop car,” Zrakovi said.

Zrakovi said he started to pull over into the Yankee Candle parking lot, but the lights went off again. The driver ultimately got away. Zrakovi called 911.

“At that point, I realized something is not right and this shouldn't be happening like this,” Zrakovi said. “I'd like to think it was kids goofing off.”

Police said the impostor was driving a black, 4-door Mazda or something similar. Fortunately, the impersonator didn't stop or confront anyone. Police are asking the public to be on the lookout, but also encouraging people to call 911 if they're not sure if it is, in fact, a police officer stopping them.

Police also remind drivers if they’re being pulled over, to slow down, turn your hazard lights on, and turn into a well-lit area.

If you have any information call the Williamsburg Police Department at (757) 220-2333 or the Crime Line 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
