HAYES, Va. (WVEC) -- A Virginia State Police trooper was hospitalized Tuesday after being involved in a car accident in Gloucester County.
State Police said the accident happened around 1 p.m. on Route 17, at the White Marsh Shopping Center.
According to State Police, while on patrol a trooper was hit by a vehicle failing to yield right of way. The trooper was traveling southbound on Route 17 in a marked car when 90-year-old Phillip W. Hamilton Jr. was attempting to exit the shopping center.
As Hamilton was exiting he crossed the southbound lanes and into the path of the state vehicle. The trooper was hit on the passenger side. The police car was pushed into the northbound lanes.
The trooper was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Hamilton was charged with failure to yield right of way, and he suffered no injuries.
