Mass shootings in the United States continue

One-hundred fifty-two. As of June 1, there have been over 152 mass shootings in the United States. Those shootings have taken 166 lives and injured 589 people.

NORFOLK, Va. — One-hundred fifty-two.

There have been 152 mass shootings in 2019 in the United States as of June 1 according to the Gun Violence Archive. These senseless acts of violence have taken 166 lives, injured 589 others and ruined countless other lives.

The Gun Violence Archive uses a purely statistical threshold to define "mass shooting based ONLY on the numeric value of 4 or more shot or killed, not including the shooter."

Two of these shootings have hit close to home for Hampton Roads.

On May 25, one person died and nine others were injured as shots were fired at a block party at Holly Cove in Chesapeake.

On May 31, 12 lives were taken and 10 others were injured after a gunman walked into Building Two at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center and shot the victims as they were finishing up their work day.

Our neighbors, our friends and some of our families have been affected by the violence as well as many others across the nation.

Politicians called for change Friday after news of the tragedy in Virginia Beach broke out. Several people called on Congress and the President to take action.

Politicians aren't the only people who can take action though. Each individual can help spur change by saying something when they see something, supporting loved ones, openly discussing issues like mental health and not letting the victims become another statistic.

Continue to say the names of the victims and spur change in their honor.
