JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- A traffic headache in James City County will get worse before it gets better.
This week VDOT started to widen Brookwood Drive at Route 199 and make other improvements.
For drivers, it’s about time.
VDOT hopes to ease traffic congestion and improve safety at the intersection.
Right now, there are two lanes on Brookwood Drive going to Route 199, a left turn-through lane and a right turn lane.
The plan is to turn the right lane into a left-turn-through lane and add a new right turn lane. This would give drivers three lanes going to the heavily-traveled Route 199.
VDOT is also doing work to a median on Route 199, a signal head at the intersection and drainage improvements.
Lindsey Martin lives in the Marlboro Apartments. She said it always gets congested at the intersection, especially during rush hour.
“I just think that they should have done it years ago,” Martin said. “When it comes to rush hour it's congested, hard to get a turn in and you could be waiting at the light for minutes.”
LLC was awarded the $358,000 construction contract.
The project is scheduled to be finished by July. Most of the work this week is limited to the shoulder, so there are no scheduled lane closures this week.
