KELLER, Va. (WVEC) -- The Accomack County Sheriff's Office said a Suffolk man is facing numerous charges after he allegedly assaulted a sheriff's deputy.

According to Sheriff Todd E. Godwin, the sheriff's office received a report of a larceny Friday morning at the Regal Inn in Onley. The arriving deputy learned that the suspect had taken an undisclosed amount of money from a guest's room and then fled in a Burgandy Chevrolet Blazer, south on Lankford Highway.

A few hours later a deputy saw a vehicle matching that description at a body shop in Keller. The deputy approached the suspect and attempted to take him into custody.

Investigators say the suspect, later identified as Edward C. Babham of Suffolk, allegedly struggled with the deputy and attempted to take his service weapon.

After a brief struggle, Brabham tried leaving in a vehicle and crashed a short time later. Other deputies who arrived on-scene took him into custody without further incident.

Babham is charged with Grand Larceny, Attempt to flee Law Enforcement, Assault and Battery on Law Enforcement, Attempt to Disarm Law Enforcement, Possession of Marijuana, Obstruction of Justice and Fail to Drive in Right Lane.

He is currently being held at the Accomack County Jail without bond.
