Possible measles exposure in Virginia, health officials investigate

Dulles Airport, Novant Health in Haymarket, Virginia and INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital are listed as possible locations of exposure, officials say.

HAYMARKET, Va. — Health officials are investigating a potential measles exposure in Northern Virginia, a press release from the Virginia Department of Health said.

Health officials are informing people who were at the below locations during certain time-frames that they might've been exposed to a person with measles. NoVa officials are working to identify people who could've been exposed.

  • Dulles International Airport: In Terminal A and the baggage claim level on Sunday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center: In the emergency department on Sunday from 11 p.m. through early Monday at 4:30 a.m.
  • Inova Fair Oaks Hospital: In the emergency department, including the waiting area, on Tuesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

So what should you do if you were at one of the above locations at the time specified?

If you've received two doses of a measles containing vaccine -- either the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine or a measles only vaccine which is available in other countries -- you're protected and don't need to do anything, VDH said.

If you've received only one dose of a measles containing vaccine, you're likely to be protected, and your risk of being infected with measles from these exposures is low. But the VDH said you should still contact your health care provider about getting a second vaccine dose.

If you've never received a measles containing vaccine or had a documented case of measles, you could be at risk of getting measles from this exposure, VDH said. You should contact your local health department or health care provider regarding possible intervention to decrease your risk of becoming infected.

Remember to call ahead before going to the office or the emergency room and tell them that you were exposed to measles.
