Sanctuary areas in the state of Virginia

A few areas in Virginia have been deemed as "sanctuary cities," offering illegal sanctuary following President Donald Trump's actions to curtail illegal immigration.

President Trump's immigration plans include indefinitely blocking Syrian refugees from the United States as well as blocking visas for refugees from Muslim-majority countries for at least 120 days.

Those countries include Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

The newly-elected president released an executive order Wednesday to support immigration enforcement and punish local governments that don't comply with federal authorities.

The Center of Immigration Studies has a map listing areas around the country as "sanctuary cities," where officials refuse to hand over illegal immigrants for deportation.

There is no sanctuary area in Hampton Roads.

Federal officials rely on local and state police to help enforce federal immigration laws. However, the law doesn't require local authorities to detain illegal immigrants just because federal authorities make a request.
