TODAY: Voter registration deadline ahead of June primaries

June's primary election will set the stage for November's general election in several key Congressional races.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Monday is the final day to register to vote in the June 12 primary election in Virginia.

It's also the last day you can update your voter registration information.

The primary has several notable statewide contests, including the Republican Senate primary.

Nick Frietas, E.W. Jackson, and Corey Stewart will compete for a chance to face Democratic Senator Tim Kaine in the general election.

Democrats Elaine Luria and Karen Mallard are also competing for a chance to reclaim the 2nd District House seat, currently held by Republican Scott Taylor.

Meanwhile, Congressman Taylor is facing competition from his own party. He'll have to fend off Republican Mary Jones if he wants a chance to defend his seat in November.

To find out how to register to vote, visit the Virginia Department of Elections website.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is also quickly approaching. Requests must be received by your local registrar by 5 p.m. June 5.
