RICHMOND, Va. — Radon is considered a serious health hazard, so the Virginia Department of Health is selling radon home test kits.
The price for a kit is $3, which covers the cost of shipping. They will only be available until supplies last.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the decay of Uranium, which is found in certain types of soil and bedrock. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to radon and its by-products may cause lung cancer.
Residents cannot see, smell, or taste radon. It can only be detected by testing.
Radon is normally reduced to very low levels in outdoor air, but in certain circumstances, it can reach much higher concentrations indoors.
