VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Marlene Rice, who acknowledged she ran an unlicensed day care center, will spend one year in jail.

Rice pleaded guilty to 11 misdemeanor counts in August. She faced charges after a child died at her home in August, 2016.

An autopsy determined the 4-month-old's cause of death was "sudden unexplained infant death."

Prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to connect Rice to the baby's death.

Judge James C. Lewis sentenced Rice on Tuesday. Each count she faced brought a 12-month sentence (for a total of 132 months). Lewis suspended all of the time except for a single year.

Rice is to be on good behavior for 11 years after her release. The judge banned her from operating a day care or supervising children for the rest of her life.
