York High School teacher skydives to raise funds for cancer research

York High School Principal Shannon Butler skydived Saturday on promise to students who raised more than $20,000 for cancer research.

York High School Principal Shannon Butler went skydiving on a promise to her students who raised more than $20,000 for cancer research.

Butler told her students she would go skydiving if they raised $15,000 by March 24 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society — they ended up raising $20,284 before the deadline.

Butler fulfilled her promise Saturday at Skydive Suffolk, where students, parents, teachers, York city leaders, York school officials and staff from the Hampton Roads chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society were on hand to see her dive, Danny Rubin said in a press release.

Rubin added that York High students Nicholas Searcy and Nichole Springhorn spearheaded the fundraising drive.
