Maury takes home first hoops title in 92 years

The Commodores beat Freedom High in the finals 57-49. It's their first state championship since 1927.

RICHMOND, Va. — 92 years is a long time to wait. Finally, another state basketball championship is coming home to Maury High School. The Commodores won the Virginia Class 5 title by beating Freedom High in the title game 57-49.

Maury was the dominant force in Virginia basketball way back in the 1920's when they took 5 championships in 7 years. The last title came in 1927, the same year Babe Ruth set the home run record at 60 with the Yankees.

The Commodores had their own "Big Bopper" in the championship game. Clarence Rupert was a force in the paint, leading the way with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Maury jumped out to a 12 point lead in the first quarter. Freedom cut to 4 midway through the third quarter. Then, the Commodores went on a run and never stopped.

Brandon Plummer is in his second year as Maury's head coach. He also won a state championship as a player with Booker T. Washington HS.
