NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The Military Family Advisory Network is showing us just how stressful a life of service can be.

The group on Thursday released its 2017 survey results, which show that military life creates financial stress:

  • 60 percent of those surveyed said they do not have enough savings to cover three months of living expenses without income.
  • 44 percent said stress due to financial concerns is detrimental to emotional and mental health.
  • 22 percent said financial stress is damaging to relationships.

Military moves are also a major contributing factor, with nearly 80 percent of people surveyed saying moves are causing high financial stress. Nearly 32 percent said they have had to move three to five times.

There is good news, however. When families have had a hard time making ends meet, they turn to the local community for support. Forty-seven percent said the experience was positive, while 30 percent said it was negative.

The survey was an online poll of 5,650 respondents (43 percent military, 56 percent military family members) conducted in October-November of 2017.
