NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A U.S. Navy sailor was sentenced to 7 years in prison on Wednesday for traveling from Newport News to Louisiana to have sex with a minor, and for receiving child pornography.
According to court documents, 23-year-old Saleem Omarie Forbes of Newport News was involved in a two-year online relationship with a female minor. The pair communicated through a text messaging app until they finally agreed to meet in person.
In March 2017, Forbes took a leave from his Navy command to travel to Louisiana to meet the minor.
Forbes picked up the minor near her middle school and drove to a motel where the two drank and engaged in sexual activities. The minor was 13 at the time of their encounter, and Forbes knew about her age.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) investigated Forbes and discovered that he also received child porn on his cell phone and laptop before traveling to Louisiana.
