NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — A Virginia State Police Senior Trooper was able to spend over a week aboard USS Harry S. Truman as part of the “Safety at Sea” program.
Senior Trooper Gavin Scott spent eight days on the aircraft carrier informing the more than 5,000 sailors about current traffic laws in Virginia before the ship returned to Naval Station Norfolk on December 16.
USS Harry S. Truman was part of Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group that deployed on April 11 for a regularly scheduled deployment. It was part of the ongoing rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations and operate in international waters across the globe.
During the eight-month deployment, crews were deployed across the 2nd, 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.
During his time on the ship, Scott shared information on safe driving practices to prepare them for their return to base in Norfolk.
Since 1971, Virginia State Police troopers have participated in the “Safety at Sea” program, which is focused on reducing traffic crashes involving military service members.
