NORFOLK, Va. — The U.S. Navy is providing new numbers tonight in response to a 13News Now investigation into the growing shortage of fighter pilots.

After our investigation, we reported 26 percent of fighter pilot positions are empty and that number is expected to rise over the next four years.

According to the Navy, the 26 percent figure refers only to first tour Junior Officers, just one subset of the Navy's fighter pilot inventory.

Government watchdog reports found the staffing shortage leads to longer deployments, increased workload and less training among squadrons.
