Newport News police investigate double shooting

When officers arrived, they found two victims, a 48-year-old man and a 31-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Police are investigating after two people were shot Saturday night.

Police say they received the call at 7:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Poplar Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found two victims, a 48-year-old man and a 31-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were taken to the hospital. The 48-year-old victim has life-threatening injuries and the 31-year-old man has non-life threatening injuries.

Neighbor Jerome Ware said he heard five gunshots when he was sitting out on his porch.

"I thought somebody was having an argument of something, and to come back later on and find out- somebody told me it was a drive by, that's scary,” said Ware. Ware said that the shooting could have ended with more people getting hurt.

"I could have gotten hit by a stray bullet and that's real sad, that thought is really sad,” said Ware.

Police say it was reported that a dark in colored van drove by and multiple shots were fired. Both victims were outside when the shooting occurred. Neighbor Kerry Mizell was upset violence keeps happening in his neighborhood.

"Because it happens with just so much frequency. I don't want to say I'm immune to it, but I'm used to it. And that's a sad thing to say, to be used to violence,” said Mizell. Mizell said that to end the violence, the community has to take on the problem together.

"I think we just need to come together as a community to find solutions, find things that people can do and give people options. This has been going on for too long, this is everybody's responsibility now," said Mizell.

The investigation remains ongoing and there is no suspect description.
