Norfolk elementary principal named National Distinguished Principal

Lauren Campsen, principal of Ocean View Elementary School, has been named a National Distinguished Principal by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals.

NORFOLK -- Lauren Campsen, principal of Ocean View Elementary School, has been named a National Distinguished Principal by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals.

Campsen will represent Virginia in Washington, D.C. in October to recognize award winners from each state.

Campsen was nominated by her peers, and named a finalist by a committee of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals.

'The National Distinguished Principals program honors outstanding elementary and middle-level administrators who ensure that America's children acquire a sound foundation for lifelong learning and achievement,' the National Association of Elementary School Principals says on its Web site.

The award was a surprise for Campsen and announced during a special assembly that included Ocean View Elementary staff, students, parents, and community partners, as well as fellow NPS principals, Mayor Paul Fraim, School Board members, the Superintendent and other central administration leaders.

'With her dedication to children and to this community, Lauren Campsen has helped make Ocean View Elementary a true Norfolk treasure,' Mayor Fraim said in congratulating Ms. Campsen. 'She will always tell you that it is her staff, her families and her community partners who make the difference, and we know that they are vital to the success of Ocean View. But Ms. Campsen is the glue that holds all of the successful pieces together, and we thank her very sincerely for her service to our city and to our children.

Campsen began working for Norfolk Public Schools as a reading teacher at Sherwood Forest Elementary School in 1978. She was a reading specialist and elementary specialist through 1994. She then served as an assistant principal at Ghent School and Ocean View Elementary until 1999, and she has been principal of Ocean View since that time.

'This is possible because I have the best, hardest-working staff in the world, and we have the best students in the world,' Ms. Campsen said.
