VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — The former Navy commander, Democrat Elaine Luria, won the 2nd Congressional District race.

The local business owner on Tuesday defeated Republican Rep. Scott Taylor, a former Navy SEAL.

Luria, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, served for 20 years in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer and nuclear engineer. She was deployed six times before retiring on June 1, 2017.

Scott Taylor released the following statement about Luria's win:

Representing this community, commonwealth, and country is and has always been the honor of my life. I am truly thankful and humbled for my supporters, friends, and most importantly...my family. I’m very proud of all the work my team has accomplished over the past two years for working people, veterans, and the military. Congrats to Elaine Luria, her family, and her supporters. We wish her all the best, as her success is our success.

ELECTION RESULTS

Luria released the following statement about her win:

I am honored to once again answer the call to serve our country and look forward to representing Virginia’s Second District in Congress. I want to thank all of my supporters who worked so hard, and I want to thank Congressman Taylor for his service to our country and this district.

I also want to thank Congressman Taylor's supporters and make something very clear: My door will be open, my phones will be on. And my job now is to work hard for all of my constituents, regardless of who they voted for on Election Day.

I have always been honest about what kind of leader I will be — an independent voice who will put country over party and lead in a bipartisan way. While I will always look for common ground, while I will always be willing to listen, I will never compromise when it comes the Coastal Virginia values of decency, community, and service to country that we all hold dear.

Before retiring from the Navy, Luria started a family business, Mermaid Factory. The Mermaid Factory in Norfolk was opened in October of 2013, and another location opened in Virginia Beach in May of 2015.

Luria’s campaign focused on her service in the Navy and small-business experience to emphasize how she will work to protect the country and help create an economy that works for everyone.

The 2nd Congressional District includes the Eastern Shore, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, the state's largest city. It's also home to the world's largest Navy base in Norfolk and has one of the highest concentrations of veterans.
