Shots Fired at US Marshals; 1 Wanted Suspect Arrested, 1 at Large

SC State sent out a text alert to students and faculty morning saying a Campus Community Shelter was in place because officers were searching near Jamison Street.

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - Orangeburg County deputies are looking for a man they say triggered a campus alert at South Carolina State University Thursday morning.

U.S. Marshals say they were serving 17-year-old Najquan Hampton with several warrants at a Coleman Street home when another man, 18-year-old Derian James, began firing shots. No officers were wounded.

Hampton was being sought for several counts of attempted murder in connection to an incident earlier this month, where witnesses say shots were fired from a dark-colored vehicle on Baxter Street.

SC State put a Campus Community Shelter in place for students and faculty as they conducted a search. Hampton was found about an hour later, but wasn't taken into custody because he reportedly wasn't involved in the shooting.

James, however, hasn't been located and several agencies are currently seeking him. He is described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds.

During the incident, students at Robert Howard Middle School, which is in the vicinity, were re-directed to Orangeburg-Wilkenson High School.

Anyone with information should call the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office at 803-534-3550 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
