Virginia Beach Schools to vote on budget in March

VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence released his version of the 2019-2020 school budget which includes a 3-percent increase for all employees.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach City Public School's Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence released his version of the 2019-2020 budget.

The estimated budget is $906,620,478, a $24 million increase over last year's budget, but within the current funding formula.

Dr. Spence is proposing a three percent raise for all employees. In the budget notes, he called it an important and compelling issue. He said low teacher pay is a problem, not only in Virginia but nationally. According to recent data, the state ranks 32nd in Average teacher salaries.

"When you find teachers that are good teachers, that aren't only good teachers but good people, you know you need to keep them,” explained parent Mariah Johnson.

Johnson hopes teachers stay in their positions, but Virginia Beach Education Association's President Kelly Walker said many educators are leaving the profession because of lack of pay. In Virginia Beach, the average teacher salary is around $54,000.

"It's unfortunate that the pay is not commemorative enough to live comfortable enough in the city where they teach," Walker said.

Many teachers are demanding a 5 percent increase. They’ve already voiced their opinions in Richmond, and they plan to attend this month’s school board meetings.

"Strong school attract businesses. It attracts the necessary revenue that we need to be a great city," Walker explained.

The school board will vote on the budget in March. It will then head to city council for final approval in May.

If the current budget is approved, School leaders believe there would not be a tax increase.
