NORFOLK, Va. — Sydney Beverly has been an all-around track athlete for Norfolk Academy for the indoor season. She does it all for the Bulldogs from the 55 meters and the hurdles, pole vault and triple jump. In one recent event, the senior scored 56 points all by herself. Not bad for someone who did gymnastics for 8 years only to make an impressive dismount into track. "What gymnastics helped me do is help me gain body awareness", she said. "So when I go over a hurdle not feeling out of control or even at pole vault or the triple jump".
Norfolk Academy track coach, Ken Lampert understands Beverly's point. "Gymnasts are usually a little fitter than what we see with kids starting these days", he says. "They also have the ability to learn complicated things maybe a little bit easier because they've had to in gymnastics."
Lampert enjoys Beverly's leadership on the team. As she puts it, "We just focus on making everybody work and push themselves to the best of their abilities."
