UNION, N.J. — An 8 1/2 hour rain delay wasn't going to stop Christopher Newport from earning its way to the NCAA Division III softball tournament's Sweet 16. The Captains completing an unbeaten Union Regional on Sunday night over the Kean Cougars.

CNU (36-7) moves on to a best-of-three Super Regional. The Captains went 3-0 in the four-team event — that included one victory over Staten Island and two over the Cougars. The Captains were ready. They scored five runs in the home first inning to take control on the wet field.

Patty Maye Ohanian, who hit four homers in the region's first two games, began with an RBI single. Ohanian then stole home to make it 2-0, and the last three runs scored on a throwing error that followed a two-out infield single by Keely Crittenden.

CNU starter Aubrey Bates gave up only a run in the 4th, two in the 5th and one in the 7th, but held off the Cougars, keeping them from forcing a winner-take-all game.
