NORFOLK, Va. — Not in regulation. Not even in 4 overtimes could things be decided between Hickory and Menchville. It came down to penalty kicks as the Hawks Erik Eads got the game winner as they got past the Monarchs 5-3 in the Class 5 Region A boys soccer semifinals Wednesday night.
Goalkeepers from both schools were the stars of the night as the Monarchs, Teddy Rogar and the Hawks, Garrett Javier just dominated. Javier was unstoppable at times in the first half. At one point, he was able to stuff two shots on one play denying Menchville's Kevin Albano and Evan Crist.
The junior would have to leave the game in the first half with an apparent right leg injury, but would return and deliver in a big way when it came down to penalty kicks. Hickory jumped back in front when Jonah Ciararu slipped one past Rogar for a 4-3 lead. When it was the Monarchs chance, Javier stuffed Luke Wilson to keep a one goal lead. Hickory's, Erik Eads then got the game winner as they advance to the finals. They'll play Princess Anne who blanked Kecoughtan 2-0.
