NORFOLK, Va.- March is basketball tournament time for the city of Norfolk and it could get busier. They were among three finalists for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament from 2021-2023. The oldest African-American sports conference, is currently in Charlotte, North Carolina and joins Baltimore, Maryland. Norfolk spokesperson, Lori Crouch said by email , "We are very excited at the possibility of welcoming the CIAA back home to Norfolk, and to realizing the economic, social and cultural benefits that the tournament represents."
The last time the 72 year old tournament was in Norfolk went from 1988-1990. It's been in Charlotte since 2006. In case you're wondering, there won't be a conflict in scheduling with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament which runs through 2021. The MEAC goes from March 5th-10th while the CIAA happens a week earlier. MEAC Commissioner, Dr. Dennis Thomas had "no comment" on the matter.
