NSU alum more than just a regular fan at MEAC Basketball Tourney

Dr. Sandi Hutchison has gone to the MEAC and CIAA Tournaments dating back to the 1970's.

NORFOLK, Va. — To say that Dr. Sandi Hutchison is a regular at the MEAC Basketball Tournament is like saying Warriors guard, Stephen Curry can hit a three point shot. A pastor at Gabriel Chapel AME Zion Church in Chesapeake, the Norfolk State alumnus has attended the MEAC and CIAA Tournaments going back five decades. She says it just kind of happened. "I was always interested in sports and would always attended the basketball tournament."

Dr. Hutchinson recalls she's missed both tournaments three times in 45 years of attending. One was the birth of the first of her two daughters, her husband's heart attack, and Hutchinson's own personal battle with cancer. The MEAC Tournament kept her going. "Even during the time I missed, I wanted to listen to the game", she says.

She's looking forward to this year's edition at Norfolk Scope. The Spartan men, who won the regular season title and is the number one seed plays Wednesday at 6pm while the women play Thursday at 2pm.
