CHARLESTON, S.C. — CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ben Stanley paced three in double figures for Hampton with 20 points and six rebounds as the Pirates fell 85-72 to Charleston Southern on Saturday.
Hampton (10-13, 5-5) held an 8-7 lead after a Stanley layup just under the 17-minute mark of the first half. Charleston Southern (12-12, 6-6) responded with a 24-8 run to lead 31-16 on a layup by Sadarius Bowser with 8:51 left in the half.
The lead grew to 39-22 with 3:47 left on a 3-pointer by Phlandrous Fleming with Hampton closing on a 10-4 flurry to trail 43-32 at half on a layup by Jermaine Marrow.
The Pirates went on an 11-4 run in the second half to trim the lead to 57-55 on a Marrow jumper with 11:20 left. Charleston Southern answered with a 12-3 run to push the lead back to 11 at 69-58 with 7:44 left on a Deontaye Buskey free throw.
Marrow had 19 points and Davion Warren had 18 points and nine rebounds for Hampton. Edward Oliver-Hampton hauled in a season-best 12 rebounds to lead Hampton on the boards.
With his 19 points tonight, Marrow went over the 2,400-point mark for his career with 2,403. He is now 16 points from passing Rick Mahorn for the all-time Hampton University scoring lead.
Hampton returns home on Monday night to face UNC Asheville at 7 pm.
