Redskins get crushed by Giants

LANDOVER, Md. -- After turning to their fourth quarterback this season in a blowout loss, the Washington Redskins’ season is falling apart. Filling in after season-ending leg injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez got his first start since Week 12 of the 2015 season, but his time in a 40-16 defeat to the New York Giants was short-lived to say the least. Josh Johnson, signed last week, got the call in the second half after Sanchez completed six of his 14 passes for 38 yards and threw two interceptions, including one pick-six.

Saquon Barkley was once again the focal point for the Giants’ offense, adding 170 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries to his stellar rookie campaign. His 78-yard touchdown run to put the Giants up 17-0 was his fifth scoring jaunt of at least 50 yards this season. Barkley’s 78-yard score opened things up for good for the Giants. After tallying just 27 total yards on 11 plays in the first quarter, New York's offense exploded for 27 points in the second quarter, including 24 in the final 8:42.

The Redskins’ halftime deficit of 34-0 was the franchise’s largest in FedEx Field history. Sanchez got the ball to start the second half but was sacked twice and benched before the ensuing drive. Johnson’s second-half action gave him his first regular-season appearance since 2014 and his first passing attempt since 2011. Eli Manning did what was asked of him, completing 14 of 22 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns, before being replaced for Kyle Lauletta in the second half.
