State Track & Field Championships: Day 2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- It was a pretty good Saturday for several area high schools and their athletes during day two of the Virginia High School League State Track & Field Championships from Todd Stadium. On the girls side Nansemond River won the Class 5 4X100 title. Brene' Donaldson, Skylar Parks, Asia Crocker and Lauryn Freeman finished in a time of 46.72 seconds. Individually, Western Branch's, Na' Taja Ballard with a strong finish to take Class 6 400 meters. The Bruins swept both girls and boys team titles. They send head coach, Claude Toukene out a winner with 26th and 27th overall titles. The girls won for the 5th straight time while the boys got their 3rd in a row. Toukene now goes on to coach Bryant & Stratton College's first year track program.

The boys side also saw an interesting finish in the Class 6 Boys 1600 meter final. Brent Bailey of Ocean Lakes held the lead going into the final turn before giving way to Lake Braddock's, Andrew Delvecchio who won in a time of 4 minutes 12 seconds. Bailey finished 2nd. The Class 5 Boys 400 meter was run by a smooth final push from Bethel's, Edward Richardson III. He winning time was 47.48 seconds.
