NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- An attempted traffic stop ended with the suspect's vehicle crashing at an exit from the Berkley Bridge in Norfolk, Portsmouth Police said.

Police said a Portsmouth officer tried stopping a vehicle that had speeded eastbound through the Downtown Tunnel on Interstate 264 on Thursday morning. Investigators said the suspect pulled over, but then took off before the officer could get out of his vehicle.

The officer continued following behind the suspect into Norfolk, but without any lights or sirens activated.

Investigators said the suspect took the St. Paul's Boulevard exit, where an accident with another vehicle happened. The driver was taken into custody.

The St. Paul's Boulevard exit ramp (Exit 9) was blocked while police conduct their investigation, but the road was reopened shortly after noon.

Portsmouth Police said the driver had active warrants and additional charges are pending.
