Drivers enjoy low gas prices during year-end travel

Holiday Travelers and lower gas prices.
Millions of travelers are expected to hit the road this holiday season.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Experts say a record breaking number of drivers are expected on the roads for the year-end travel.

Many customers were at the Wawa on Northampton Boulevard.

"You know, I can't believe that we are at $1.77 this morning. I mean, I haven't seen prices like these in 10 years," said Gary Hill.

The Virginia average is $1.84. You can find the cheapest gas in the area by using the 13News Now Gas Tracker, also available on the 13News Now app.

"I am glad they're lower, but it is going to increase the amount of traffic going up, especially on the Jersey Turnpike today," said traveler Phil Zettel.

AAA Tidewater expects there to be record numbers of people on the highways. Around 90 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Christmas.

"I hope they are safe out there. Drive carefully and know that you have to drive for yourself and for other people also," said Tony McBride.

AAA estimates 2.8 million Virginians will travel and that's the largest number since 2001. Gas prices are down, but Christmas Eve temperatures are expected to be near a record breaking 75 degrees.

That suits Gary Hill just fine.

"I am very disappointed that I cannot wear my ugly Christmas sweater on Christmas Eve, but I will take 75 degrees anytime I can get it," he said.

Experts also say that nationwide, the low gas prices are expected to save drivers close to $1.6 billion, compared to 2014.
