NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Three separate crashes caused big rush hour traffic problems in Norfolk on Wednesday morning.

Police dispatch said the accidents happened within moments of each other at about 8:53 a.m. on Brambleton Avenue and 2nd Street. The first two accidents happened on the westbound side. As the first crash happened, a Dodge Journey tried to avoid the wreck by swerving and hit a Volkswagen Beetle in the process. The Beetle then overturned.

Meanwhile on the eastbound side, a driver stopped to check on the person in the overturned Beetle. Three cars were behind this vehicle; the first two were able to stop, but the third rear-ended them, creating a chain reaction crash.

Medics took the driver of the Beetle to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All westbound lanes were shut down for a time, and one eastbound lane was closed. Shortly after 10 a.m., the accident scenes were cleared and traffic was flowing normally again.

The driver of the Dodge Journey was charged with failure to maintain control, while the driver who started the chain reaction crash was charged with following too closely.
