Ringing in the new year with higher tolls

It's becoming an annual tradition: starting a new year with higher tolls throughout Hampton Roads.

When the clock struck midnight to ring in 2019, tolls will went around Hampton Roads. 

Beginning Tuesday morning at the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge, E-ZPass users will have to pay $2.45 each way, a 10-cent increase. Pay-by-plate customers will pay $5.30 per trip which is up 15 cents from 2018.

You'll also shell out more to cross the Midtown and Downtown tunnels. Those tolls go up every year.

During peak hours, from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Monday through Friday:

  • Rates for E-ZPass passenger vehicles will increase from $2.09 to $2.20.
  • Rates for registered/pre-paid pay-by-plate customers will increase from $3.81 to $3.98.
  • Rates for unregistered pay-by-plate customers will increase from $5.53 to $5.76.

During all other (non-peak) hours, including holidays and weekends:

  • Rates for E-ZPass passenger vehicles will increase from $1.73 to $1.79.
  • Rates for registered/pre-paid pay-by-plate customers will increase from $3.45 to $3.57.
  • Rates for unregistered pay-by-plate customers will increase from $5.17 to $5.35.

Finally, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will see its first toll increase in five years:

  • Peak season times will increase to $18, up from $16. E-ZPass customers can do a return trip within 24 hours for $2, which is actually a decrease from $3
  • Off-peak season times will increase to $14, up from $13. E-ZPass customers can do a return trip within 24 hours for $6, up from $5.

Peak season pricing is Friday through Sunday, from May 15 through September 15. Off-peak season pricing is all other times.

The toll rates due to a resolution first adopted in 2013, which states tolls on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will increase approximately 10 percent every five years, to help fund the Parallel Thimble Shoal Project.
