NORFOLK, Va. — Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle crash that involved an ambulance and a Mercedes-Benz early morning Thursday.
The crash happened around 2:24 a.m. on the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. It happened on the Norfolk side of the bridge.
A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police said the 2004 Mercedes-Benz was driving fast down the interstate when the car hit a private ambulance, flipping it over. The two people inside the ambulance were hurt, but expected to recover.
The Mercedes-Benz was pushed into a jersey wall by the impact of the crash, police said. Bystanders reported the driver, a Black man, walking away from the car with an apparent head injury.
That driver had not been found by 3:30 p.m.
Investigators aren't sure how the driver of the Mercedes-Benz left the scene. The Coast Guard, Hampton Fire & Rescue and Virginia Marine Resources Commission searched the water around the bridge in case he jumped over the side.
By 8:30 a.m., officials had called off the water search.
Investigators are asking witnesses who might have information about the incident to call tips in to the Virginia State Police at 757.424.6800, or email questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
