Charlotte Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway open campgrounds to Florence evacuees

Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Atlanta Motor Speedway will open their campgrounds for evacuees heading inland from Hurricane Florence.

With severe weather in the forecast for other southeastern states, accommodations will be available as long as possible prior to potential landfall. Evacuees will have access to bathhouse facilities on speedway property.

“While the Charlotte area is not completely out of the region that could face the effects of Hurricane Florence, for many of our neighbors to the east it is a safer alternative or a good stopping point as they seek shelter elsewhere,” said Greg Walter, executive vice president of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “We look forward to welcoming anyone who needs a place to stop and to showing them the hospitality they deserve as we ride out this storm together.

Evacuees are asked to check in at the Camping World Racing Resort office at the Rock City campground, which can be accessed at the entrance to zMAX Dragway, starting as early as Tuesday at noon. After-hour arrivals should call the speedway’s Guest Services department at 704-507-5612.

Last year, the speedway opened their sites free of charge to evacuees of Hurricane Irma. Now, they’re doing the same thing for Florence evacuees.

The campgrounds are equipped to handle thousands of campers during their annual NASCAR weekend, they said in a release. Once again, the campground will be free of charge for dry RV and tent campers in the Legends Campground. For full hookup sites, it will cost $20 a night.

Located adjacent to the campgrounds, the speedway will open The Rinnai Shower camper bath house that will allow evacuees free access to hot showers and restrooms during their stay.

Those interested in RV or tent camping for free, enter the Legends campground at Entrance "E" off GA Highway 19/41. The campground is on the right.

From I-75 and GA Highway 20, campers should see signs to AMS and follow Lower Woolsey road to Entrance "H" and the Speedway Credential Building. Make a right into the speedway’s property and then another immediate right onto Richard Petty Boulevard. Follow Richard Petty Boulevard and turn left into Entrance "G." The Legends campground will be on the right.
