If you're planning on hitting the beach this weekend or any time this summer, make sure you know what to do if you ever find yourself caught in a rip current while swimming.

They are powerful currents of water that move away from the shore and can pull swimmers with them.

If you ever find yourself in a rip current, don't panic and don't fight the current. Try to swim parallel and out of it. If you can't seem to escape, try to float and tread the water.

"When you get stuck in a rip current, don't fight it. Let it pull you out. As weird as it sounds, let it pull you out, and then swim right or left of the beach you came in from," said Kacper Jesiotr with the Coast Guard.

Tom Gill, the Chief of Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service, said rip currents are the number one water emergency lifeguards respond to in Virginia Beach.

"The one thing families need to know about is really where the waves are not breaking and it looks like a calm area to be but it could be one of the most dangerous areas," he said.

He advises people to swim near lifeguards and ask lifeguards to let them know where rip currents are before going into the water.
