FORECAST: Weather Alert Day issued for Thursday due to widespread, heavy rain

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding are possible Thursday.

NORFOLK, Va. — A slow-moving cold front is bringing scattered showers to the region, but as an area of low pressure develops along the front moves in, rain will become more widespread and heavy at times.

Because of the heavy rain, Thursday has been designated a "Weather Alert Day" by the 13News Now weather team.

What is a "Weather Alert Day?" It's a day where there is high confidence in the forecast that inclement weather will bring significant impacts to the Hampton Roads community. Late Wednesday into Thursday, the next weather system will bring a prolonged period of heavy downpours that will lead to an elevated risk of flooding.

Rainfall rates of up to 1” an hour are possible, and areas with poor drainage could have some flooding and standing water. This could lead to travel impacts on the morning commute. Lightening and thunder are impacting the region now.

A Weather Alert Day is issued for Thursday due to heavy rainfall that may cause flash flooding and messy commute conditions.

As the morning progresses, heavy, widespread rainfall will continue. Total rainfall amounts will generally be between 2 to 4" between Wednesday's showers and the showers and thunderstorms through Thursday night, which could cause ponding water and potential flooding concerns.

Given the rainfall from this weekend and the lingering wet ground, flooding is possible, especially for northeast North Carolina. A Flood Watch is in effect for the Peninsula, Southside, and northeastern North Carolina through Thursday evening.

If you encounter any flooded roadways, please do not drive through them. Turn around; don't drown.

With the potential for flash flooding, a Flood Watch is in effect for the most of the area until 8 p.m. Thursday.

We are already at our eighth wettest March on record. With the additional rain expected on Wednesday and Thursday, we will move up that list.

With the cloudy, rainy weather, temperatures won't budge much during the day. Look for highs to be around 50°.

We'll have widespread but lighter rainfall through the afternoon. The rain will taper off tonight.

The storm should move out to sea late Thursday, taking the rain and clouds with it. It will be mostly sunny on Friday with passing, isolated showers during the afternoon. Highs will rise back into the lower to middle 60s.

Temperatures moderate a bit this weekend with highs above normal, in the lower 70s. It will be partly to mostly sunny both Saturday and Easter Sunday. A shower or two may try to develop late Sunday, but the forecast looks dry for the bulk of Easter.

There will be a slightly better chance of spotty showers across the area Monday and Tuesday, but it will remain mild, with highs in the upper 60s to near 70°.
