NORFOLK, Va., (WVEC) -- Hurricane season officially begins Friday.
The federal government predicts an above-average 2018 hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin, where five to nine hurricanes are expected to form.
13News Now meteorologist Iisha Scott said it's important to be prepared before a storm hits.
Here's a checklist that will prepare you:
- Have a list of supplies ready to go. Think primitive – like you're going camping – battery powered items, manual everything, non-perishable food, water and don't forget to have cash on hand. You can do this right now before any hurricanes are on the way.
- Fill up your gas tank in case you need to evacuate. You don't want to be stuck if stations get overwhelmed and start running out of fuel.
- Know your evacuation route if you're in a storm surge area. This goes along with knowing your zone. If you need to learn yours visit 13News Now Hurricane page.
- Stay informed. Since storms can develop and make landfall quickly. Sometimes storms go from no big deal to incredibly dangerous in just a few days. Visit our Hurricane Center for storm updates and information.
