Hurricane season is here. 4 ways to prepare now

Here are 4 ways to prepare for the 2018 hurricane season, which is expected to be above average for the Atlantic Basin.

NORFOLK, Va., (WVEC) -- Hurricane season officially begins Friday.

The federal government predicts an above-average 2018 hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin, where five to nine hurricanes are expected to form.

13News Now meteorologist Iisha Scott said it's important to be prepared before a storm hits.

Here's a checklist that will prepare you:

  1. Have a list of supplies ready to go. Think primitive – like you're going camping – battery powered items, manual everything, non-perishable food, water and don't forget to have cash on hand. You can do this right now before any hurricanes are on the way.
  2. Fill up your gas tank in case you need to evacuate. You don't want to be stuck if stations get overwhelmed and start running out of fuel.
  3. Know your evacuation route if you're in a storm surge area. This goes along with knowing your zone. If you need to learn yours visit 13News Now Hurricane page.
  4. Stay informed. Since storms can develop and make landfall quickly. Sometimes storms go from no big deal to incredibly dangerous in just a few days. Visit our Hurricane Center for storm updates and information.
