Fatal Virginia Beach fire claims life of 15-year-old

A teenager has died following a fire at a Virginia Beach home Thursday morning.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Officials say a fatal fire in Virginia Beach has claimed the life of a 15-year-old Green Run High School student

Fire officials say they were called to the 3900 block of Hedgefield Court just before 8:30 Thursday morning. Arriving firefighters found a 15-year-old boy on fire. They put out the flames and rushed that boy to the hospital, where he later died.

Police say the fire began in a home's backyard, but right now they say there does not appear to be anything suspicious surrounding the incident.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

This afternoon, the principal of Green Run High School sent parents this message:

Good afternoon – This is Todd Tarkenton, principal of Green Run High School. It is with a heavy heart I call you today. As some of you may have seen through media reports, one of our freshman students passed away today in a fire at his home. Undoubtedly, this loss will weigh heavily on our students, staff and family here at Green Run. We will have additional counselors at the school tomorrow if any student needs to talk. Our administrators will also be in the hallways and classrooms to check in on students throughout the day. This is certainly a sad day for our school community, so, I ask that we keep this family and our Green Run family in our thoughts as we continue on. Thank you for your support of Green Run High School.

The family has created a 'Go Fund Me' page for a memorial fund. You can find that page here.
