With heat advisory, NWS urges drivers not to leave children, pets in vehicles

Drivers should be aware that with current temperatures leaving a child or pet in a car for a short amount of time can be deadly.

NORFOLK, Va. — A heat advisory in the area forecasts heat index temperatures between 100 and 110 degrees. The National Weather Service in Wakefield is urging people to "look before you lock."

Drivers should be aware that with current temperatures, leaving a child or pet in a car for a short amount of time can be deadly.

On average, 38 kids die each year by being left in a vehicle, the National Weather Service said.

Leaving pets in a hot car is also another concern.

Virginia's "Good Samaritan" law protects citizens from lawsuits for helping a person in an emergency.

That "includes the forcible entry of a motor vehicle in order to remove an unattended minor at risk of serious bodily injury or death, provided the person has attempted to contact a law-enforcement officer," according to the law code.
