Five people displaced following Chesapeake house fire

Everyone inside -- including their pets -- escaped safely before firefighters arrived.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Five people, including three children, are looking for somewhere to stay following a house fire in Chesapeake.

Firefighters were called to the 800 block of Bainbridge Boulevard in the South Norfolk section of the city shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday. Arriving crews found smoke and flames rising from the home's attic area.

The home's residents told officials their lights began to flicker and they started smelling smoke.  Everyone inside -- including their pets -- escaped safely before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control and keep it from spreading to the remainder of the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
