'Very unfortunate' | Woman found dead on shoreline in Norfolk's Ocean View, police say

The investigation began when officers responded to a report of a body found on the shoreline in the 1800 block of East Ocean View Avenue.

NORFOLK, Va. — A woman was found dead on the shoreline in the Ocean View area of Norfolk Sunday morning, police said.

The investigation began around 7:40 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to a report of a body found on the shoreline in the 1800 block of East Ocean View Avenue, according to the Norfolk Police Department (NPD).

The officers located an unresponsive woman there, and she was pronounced dead.

Locals in the area 13News Now spoke with say they were saddened and shocked by the news.

"This neighborhood has been changing the last 5-10 years," explained Jenna Mueller, an area resident. "Everyone is super friendly. I’m surprised I haven’t heard about it, especially with being in our backyard.”

Pat Duncan, another resident in the area, shared similar sentiments, calling the situation "very unfortunate."

"I walk this beach every day," said Duncan. "I feel like it’s really safe to walk. I enjoy living here; the people are friendly."

This is the third body to be found in Norfolk waters in the past month. The first body was found in January in a lake near the airport. The second body was found days later near Willoughby spit. Police do not suspect foul play in those two cases.

The NPD said the woman's death is being investigated, but the Medical Examiner's Office will determine the official manner and cause of her death.

Police said the woman's name will be released once her identity is confirmed and when her next of kin is notified.
