Mechanical trouble causes plane to crash on Knotts Island

The pilot was the only person on the plane, and he was not injured.

KNOTTS ISLAND, N.C. — A small private plane crashed in some marsh on Knotts Island, North Carolina on Saturday.

Currituck County Fire-EMS received the 911 call around 5:11 p.m. about the crash in the 200 block of Island Bay Lane.

The pilot and sole occupant of the Cessna aircraft was uninjured. He was able to get out of the plane on his own before emergency personnel arrived.

The pilot was assisted back onto dry land by emergency personnel using a ladder. The Currituck County Sheriff’s Department also assisted.

The flight started from the Suffolk Executive Airport in Suffolk and experienced mechanical trouble while flying near the island.

The crash is under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety.
