Person hurt, taken to hospital after driving into children's spa

Crews had to cut apart a sedan that crashed into Take II Children's Spa in order to rescue the driver of the car.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A driver was hurt Monday after a car crashed into a children's spa on Kempsville Road. Firefighters tweeted that no one was inside the building at the time of the incident.

The Virginia Beach Department Technical Rescue team had to cut the driver out of the car as it sat in Take II Children's Spa. Medics took the driver to the hospital. There was no immediate word on the extent of the driver's injuries.

“I was just thankful that no one was in there and no one was hurt. I’m glad we were closed, so I thank God that we were closed, and no one was in the shop,” said owner Latashia Bates.

On any given weekend, Take 2 Children’s Spa, would be filled with little kids getting their nails painted and their hair done. Bates is glad this happened on a Monday.

The car, which smashed through a brick wall, was so far into the building, it was like a garage.

“They told me that a car went through the building, I thought. 'maybe it hit the door,’ so they were going to board it up. I didn’t think it was anything serious, and then she said the car was in the building and I was like, ‘what,'” said Bates.

“I couldn’t even believe the damage one car can do to a building,” said Joann Kelly, who was cutting hair at Crew Cuts, located in the same strip mall.

“I looked to my right when I saw this car fly by and I was like, ‘holly crap that person is going like 100 miles per hour,’ and all of a sudden it was like boom,” said Kelly.

Kelly called 911 then rushed over to help the woman behind the wheel, who had injured her leg.

“We were worried about the lady that was inside so we were all trying to get her out,” said Kelly.

Firefighters and EMT’S had to bring in the jaws of life to free the woman.

“I mean they took off all the doors, the roof, everything to get her out,” said Kelly.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but Kelly says all indications according to rescue workers was it was a medical issue that caused the woman to lose control.

“They were saying that she probably had a stroke or something which probably got her to drive all the way down the parking lot,” said Kelly.

As for Take 2 Children’s Spa, they plan to re-open as soon as possible.
