Suspects, victim's ex-girlfriend, in court facing murder charges

The victim's ex-girlfriend was one of the suspects charged with 2nd-degree murder

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police found a man with a gunshot wound in his car last Thursday night, and two people have been charged with murder.

Police responded to the 700 block of East Little Creek Road just after 9:30 p.m. for a reported vehicle crash. Once on the scene, officers found 25-year-old Patrick M. Cochrane of Suffolk inside the car with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died.

The investigation revealed Cochrane was shot in the 7900 block of Orchid Avenue. Wayne Malloy heard it all happen just yards away in his front yard.

“Arguing, arguing, slow down – then arguing, arguing, ok fine, they started arguing again, and so I look out the window again, I see the black car take off," he said. "And as he’s taking off, a gunshot goes off and I see four, what looked like four people out there. Know one was a female, and they started running back to the apartments."

Police arrested Jeremy Harris and Becca Banta. 13News Now spoke with the victim's family who claimed Banta is Patrick's ex-girlfriend.

Court documents show that Banta was charged with Second-Degree Murder, Firearm use in a Conspiracy of a Felony, Conspiracy, and accessory after the fact. Harris was charged with Second-Degree Murder, Firearm use in the Commission of a Felony, and Conspiracy.

Both suspects were arraigned on Monday.
