Man drowns while boating on Chickahominy Lake in New Kent

A 37-year-old man from Hopewell went swimming while boating on the Chickahominy Lake. He wasn't able to make it back to the boat.

A 37-year-old man drowned while boating on the Chickahominy Lake in New Kent on Saturday.

The New Kent County Sheriff said the man went into the water to swim with family and friends, but he was not able to make it back to the boat. Family members tried to reach him, but they were unsuccessful.

The Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call around 3:55 p.m. 

Crews from New Kent Fire-Rescue, West Point Fire-Rescue, James City Fire-Rescue, the Virginia Game Commission, the Virginia State Police Med-Flight Helicopter and the New Kent Sheriff’s Office started searching for the man.

On Sunday, crews from New Kent Fire-Rescue, West Point Fire-Rescue, James City Fire-Rescue, the Virginia Game Commission, the Virginia State Police Dive Team and the New Kent Sheriff’s Office continues the search for the missing Hopewell man.

On Sunday, the victim was recovered around 10:10 a.m.

The body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond.

No further information has been released.
